Job Description

Job Summary:

As a Small Engine Specialist, your primary focus will be the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of small engines, two-cycle equipment, and battery-powered handheld landscape equipment. You will ensure that mowers, trimmers, blowers, hedgers, and other handheld/compact equipment operate safely and efficiently. While the role is primarily small-engine focused, you may assist with basic vehicle and trailer maintenance as needed. You will also support evening maintenance tasks and help keep all equipment ready for daily operations. The ideal candidate will be safe, hardworking, reliable, and have a strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities:

As the Small Engine Specialist your duties will include but not be limited to the following:

  • Primary Troubleshooting and Repair Focus:
    • Small engines – lawn mowers, walk-behinds, push mowers
    • Two-cycle equipment – trimmers, blowers, hedgers, edgers, and similar tools
    • Battery-powered handheld equipment and battery-powered mowers
    • Basic electrical troubleshooting on battery-powered systems
  • Perform preventative maintenance on:
    • Small engine and handheld equipment (oil changes, filter changes, blade sharpening, plug replacement, carburetor cleaning, etc.)
    • Battery-powered equipment (battery diagnostics, tool tear-down, connection checks, firmware updates when applicable)
  • Document repairs and complete work orders in Aspire
  • Diagnose advanced issues on 2-cycle and handheld equipment
  • Ensure equipment is clean, properly maintained, and in safe working order
  • Perform evening blade changes on mowers
  • Assist in leading the evening crew to ensure all handheld equipment maintenance is completed and trucks are fueled
  • Perform minor repairs in the field as needed
  • Work with manufacturers/support reps for complex small engine or electrical issues
  • Assist with basic shop tasks such as:
  • Light fabrication or welding (as needed)
  • Basic maintenance on trucks, trailers, and machinery (oil changes, tires, lights, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Skills/Requirements: 

  • Minimum of 3 years of shop, mechanic, small engine, or fleet experience
  • Must be proficient in two-cycle repair, small engine repair, and battery-powered equipment diagnostics
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot a variety of landscape equipment
  • Strong leadership and communication skills (English)
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Approval/pass of DOT physical requirements

Physical Demands/Working Conditions: 

  • Able to lift 50 lbs. (Equipment, tools, and supplies may need to be lifted, carried and/or pushed) 
  • Able to walk/stand for long periods of time 
  • Able to reach, bend, twist, kneel, stoop, squat, crouch and grasp along with repetitive movements may be part of daily job duties. 
  • Must be able to work in summer and winter climates

Physical Demands:

  • Work outside in various weather conditions that may be hot, cold, wet, or turbulent
  • Work in environments with loud noise levels, requiring hearing protection
  • Must be able to work long hours and overtime during emergencies
  • Must understand and abide by all OSHA regulations, including wearing PPE
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to stand, bend, and squat for extended periods

Schedule: 6:30am - 5:00, Monday - Thursday (OT potential)
