Overview:

The psychiatric consultant supports the patient, primary care provider, emergency room team, and behavioral health team—through regular consultation on an assigned caseload of patients. The psychiatric consultant advises the primary provider on appropriate medications and other treatment strategies, also providing the care team with educational support on diagnosing and managing behavioral health conditions.

  • Provide direct and consulting care to in-patients and/or out-patients. Recommend any treatment adjustments through the case review process or in ad hoc consultations, including medication recommendations and other interventions, within 24 hours of consulting with a behavioral health care manager or other team members.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agency requirements (e.g. JCAHO).
  • Review cases with other members of the CL team to ensure quality of care and efficient use of resources.
  • Maintain clinical activity by full participation in departmental clinical workload.
  • Participate in medical staff leadership activities.
  • Prepares for, attends and participates in team meetings and daily huddle per CL team
  • Collaborates in developing team priorities, patient goals, and care plans
  • Education to primary teams and the department staff to improve awareness around mental health related issues.
  • Keeps problem list, medication list and patient care plan updated for team members
  • Approves orders and referrals for health maintenance
  • Timely documentation of diagnostic evaluations and subsequent evaluations with clearly communicated plan.
  • Be available to provide occasional and hoc telephone consultation to primary care providers for very complex patients or challenging patient situations. Respond to telephone calls or Epic Secure Chat in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with other psychiatric consultants for vacation coverage.
  • Provide teleconsultation for Westerly Hospital as needed at the request of the Chair.

 

If Consulting Remotely and Offsite from Clinic Teams

 

  • If possible, visit Westerly Hospital at least once when initiating a new consulting relationship and then at least once per year to meet clinic providers and discuss ongoing collaboration.
  • Maintain professional cell phone and email accounts for contact during usual business hours.
  • Check professional accounts daily and respond to email questions/consultations within two business days, sooner if urgent.
Qualifications:

  Qualifications

  • MD or MBBS
  • Completion of an accredited psychiatry residency program with preferred Consult liaison fellowship training
  • Board certification in psychiatry and/or CL psychiatry.
  • Demonstrated aptitude and interest in educating medical students, residents and fellows.
  • Exhibits qualities that role model excellence in patient care for trainees.
  • Provides excellent patient care in all venues
  • Having a Positive, flexible, and solution-focused attitude.
  • Ability to quickly synthesize medical and psychiatric data and formulate effective and evidence based clinical recommendations desired.
  • Success interacting with patients, all staff, administration, physicians of all types, medical students.

Licensure Requirements

  • Licensed to practice medicine in the state of CT and RI.
  • ABPN certification as noted above.

Education

  • MD or MBBS; completion of an accredited medicine residency program and pulmonary fellowship program, with board certification in both medicine and pulmonary medicine
