**Individuals who are eligible for Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position (s).

Under direction of the Community Resource Manager, this position will conduct and/or facilitate Native American spiritual ceremonies, oral traditions, cultural studies, and to do other related work. This position will also supervise and report attendance for a minimum of two incarcerated workers assigned to the Native American Spirit Leader. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

To direct and provide spiritual and moral guidance and instruction to incarcerated people practitioners of the American Indian traditional religion. To facilitate and instruct in the oral tradition, ethics, cultural heritage, sacred music, and drum ceremony, and other aspects of the traditional American Indian religion. To lead the ceremonies whenever possible and/or to designate incarcerated people pipe holders and sweat leaders to conduct them in the absence of the Native American Spiritual Leader.

To facilitate meaningful interaction and understanding between practitioners of the traditional American Indian religion and institution administers, correctional personnel, and others who have day-to-day contact with incarcerated people practitioners.

To provide family counseling on problems inherent to having a family member in a rehabilitation center; verification of incarcerated person marriages; facilitation of special ceremonies designed to strengthen family and community ties.

To facilitate meaningful interaction between incarcerated people practitioners and the outside American Indian community; to provide interpretation to community groups concerning the institutional religious program.

The California Department of Corrections Rehabilitation (CDCR) Headquarters has implemented a new automated system to streamline the hiring process. Working Conditions

San Quentin State Prison is California’s oldest and best-known correctional institution, which was established on the site currently known as Point San Quentin, in July of 1852, as an answer to the rampant lawlessness in California at the time. The prison rests overlooking the bay on 432 acres and is located just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the county of Marin. The walled prison is made up of four (4) large cell blocks (West, South, North, and East Block), one (1) maximum security cell block (the Adjustment Center), Central Health Care Service Building, a medium security dorm setting and a minimum-security firehouse.
