Job Description

Who is Saint Louis University? Founded in 1818, Saint Louis University is one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious Catholic universities. SLU, which also has a campus in Madrid, Spain, is recognized for world-class academics, life-changing research, compassionate health care, and a strong commitment to faith and service.

The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering in the School of Science and Engineering at Saint Louis University seeks a dynamic, collegial, collaborative, and creative individual for a tenure-track position in aerospace engineering. This position offers the opportunity to be a member of one of the oldest aerospace engineering programs in a rapidly-growing engineering school in the heart of St. Louis, a city with strong connections to the aerospace and defense industries. The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in the aerospace curriculum at undergraduate and graduate levels and to develop a sponsored research program. The expectation is to hire at the rank of assistant professor; however, candidates with exceptional qualifications will be considered for appointment at higher ranks, including those with tenure.

We invite applications from highly qualified individuals for a tenure-track faculty position in the following broad areas: smart/adaptive aerospace structures, advanced/multifunctional aerospace materials, aeroelasticity and structural dynamics, aerospace robotics, space structures and deployables, digital twins and resilient systems, autonomy and AI/ML for aerospace systems. Other areas of aerospace engineering will be considered, particularly if they complement existing program strengths and could collaborate in campus-level research initiatives at SLU (modeling & simulation, artificial intelligence, and geospatial applications).

Assistance in developing coursework will be provided by the Department.
  • Generating sponsored research. Expectations include significant effort towards developing a robust externally-funded research program involving undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs and other research personnel. Startup packages are available for qualified candidates, as is mentoring for proposal development and enhancing collaboration.
  • Student mentoring. Saint Louis University strives to educate the whole person, and thus all faculty actively engage in undergraduate and graduate student mentoring.
  • Departmental and School service. While the first priorities for tenure-track faculty are to develop their teaching and research portfolios, there are minimum service expectations to the Department and School.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned Ph.D. in aerospace or mechanical engineering or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and scholarly activity, including peer reviewed journal and conference papers, grant writing, mentoring students, and developing an independent research agenda

  • Readiness to teach undergraduate and graduate courses as demonstrated through previous teaching and teaching-preparation experiences
  • Desire to engage with SLU’s mission-driven learning and outreach activities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Post-doctoral fellowship experience
  • Relevant teaching experience that promotes hands-on, experiential learning
  • Established record of interdisciplinary collaboration and impactful research work
  • Demonstrated ability and vision to collaborate and build a multidisciplinary initiative in pursuit of enhancing undergraduate and graduate education
